Welcome to Universe B

The 130th Regiment, plus sundry scientists, civilians and hangers on, has found itself hurled through a dimensional rift, into 'Universe B'.  The rift is now closed, and the regiment is stranded in a universe not their own.

After the first few hours of confusion and finding out (See the tail end of OP Strawberry), the intrepid Colonel Killgore issues a morale-boosting missive:

Classification: JOLLY SECRET

Caveat: NDIS OFFICERS

To: All Officers

From: Lt Col Killgore, 130th EMR

Subject: UNIVERSE B

Gentlemen,

Let us not get carried away with the strange and unusual events that have taken place recently, and the new location in which we find ourselves.

Our mission remains the same as it was when we started: "To... recover as many survivors as possible, while maintaining normal security". Nothing that has happen leads me to decide that the situation has changedsufficiently to seek a new Mission.

It is quite clear that we must carry out the following actions immediately:

1. Tend to our casualties.

2. Secure the local area - and this does NOT include exposing our presence to possible SPOOKS until more information is known.

3. Re-distribute Combat Supplies.

4. Make preparations for an extended stay. These plans are only to be instituted after we have been in Universe B for 10 days. Until then normal routine will be followed, normal rations will be issued, etc. At the ten day point, if I approve the plans for maximising your available resources, they will be implemented.

In the meantime we must support the GEEKS in attempting to find a way home. They should be able to advise us more within the 10 day period as to possible courses of action.

In summary. We sit tight and find out as much as we can for the next ten days.

Major Patel:

1. Please arrange for casualties to be treated. Personnel are not to be reassigned, but Senior NCOs may be temporarily attached within Groups to Squads that have suffered casualties.

2. Please arrange a memorial service for those killed in action within the next 5 days. It is my intention that they will be buried on the remains of the MESA moon unless the GEEKS advise us that it would effect our chances of finding a way back to Universe A. They earned their portion of the moon, so they can keep it forever.

3. Please arrange a full replenishment of combat supplies, in accordance with the Standard Op Order contained in the SOPs. Notify all officers if you find shortages of any critical supplies. Get the Logs team to do a 100% check of all supplies - I don't want to find that the seals are broken on some box of vital supplies that was hidden at the back of a shelf.

4. Please arrange a shift system with one Group on Rest, one on stand-by and maintenance tasks in the local area, and one Group on task.

Major Howland:

1. Please come up with a plan to keep us going for the longest possible time after the 10 day period. Keep it simple and rations are not to be reduced by more than half. Assume no external assistance or resources that are not contained on the MESA moon or the planet on which we find ourselves.

2. You are responsible for the remaining MESA moon facilities. Please come up with a plan for prioritising the work to repair the remaining facilities and assist the GEEKS. You will need to speak with then first to find out what they need from us. Once that is taken care of, I would like the weapons emplacements on-line if at all possible.

Major Cornelius:

1. Please come up with a plan for intelligence gathering in the area outside the remains of the MESA moon facility. You should submit a list of intelligence questions, in priority order. You will have Lt Mouat, the supernumerary attached to assist you. Please liase with Maj Howland and the Captain of the Precision Creek to agree the ships available for each of you and the best locations for them.

2. You can recce the entirety of this planet but you are not to travel further without express authority. You are also responsible for ensuring that no unnecessary emissions are produced that could reveal our presence to the local JOKERS. To this end you are to pay particular attention to the Int Chaps who are attached - there is something funny going on with them and I don't want any surprises - so make sure you have a plan to secure them at all times. I don't want them (or anyone) wandering about on their own off ship or out of a pressurised facility.

Finally, Gentlemen, I should point out to you that we have foreseen the possibility that we might end up some place that we might not get back from. Indeed our SOPs even have a codeword for just such an eventuality. If that is to be the case, we will need to rely on each other more than we have ever done in the past, and make sure that after we have exhausted very possibility we take as many of the enemy with us when we go.

However, The 130th Regiment has been in quite a few scrapes in our time and we have managed to extricate ourselves from every one. I don't see this little scrape as being any different. The local scenery may be different to what we are used to, but I can assure you...

...targets will still fall when hit.

So:

Keep steady.

Keep to the high standards that I have come to expect of the Regiment.

and Keep a bloody close eye on those Int bastards, because I don't trust them...

...and well all get through this together.

T A Killgore

Lt Col, Commanding

The 130th Regiment

FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS

From Major Patel

Date Day 3 Universe B

Subject small craft approching

To JIM0000 and Captain Phoenix

>What is the max observed acceleration of the small craft?

It is coming in at between 0.9 and 1.3g (hard to judge at this distance) - we'll get a better estimate over the next few days.

>What is the earliest time it will reach us at max observed accleration?

Day 9

>Any better idea of size? shuttle, destroyer or crusier?

Small shuttle sized. Or smaller. A probe perhaps?  We have enhanced the image - it might look like this:

FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS 2

>From Major Patel

>Date Day 4 Universe B

>Subject Planet X

>To JIM0000 and Captain Phoenix

>Has Planet X got an atmosphere?

From its albedo, the estimation is that it has an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere.

>Has Planet got any moons?

None detected yet (but that doesn't rule it out)

>Have we observed any orbital facilities at Planet X or elsewhere in this system?

Not yet, but that doesn't rule them out. If only you were on a Survey Ship, this would have been so much easier.

I Remain,

JIM-0000
