Operational Orders - Subsidiary Operation POWDER MONEY

To Lt Col Killgore

Copy 130 EMR,

From Major Patel

OPERATION POWDER MONKEY

1. It is obvious that the attempted sabotage of the powder production facilities is an operation that can be carried out independently of other operations with the minimum of personnel.  Therefore Major Mukul Patel is to draw up a plan for this to take place at the earliest suitable opportunity. Technical advice will be provided by the Supernumerary, Lt Mouat.

2. The operation is to be carried out with a complete staff of no more that 6 personnel drawn from C Group, but including any of the Command Group's Sergeant Majors, all of whom are rated "Expert" or "Outstanding" at explosives, demolitions and improvised devices, at Maj Patel's discretion.

3. The Mission for the operation is: To destroy the enemies powder manufacturing facilities by unattributable means, in order to reduce the effectiveness of their field army. If there is a conflict between carrying out the mission, and doing so in an unattributable manner, the mission should be aborted.

4. Maj Patel is to draw up the initial concept for approval by the Command Group and after given authority to proceed will assume command of the day to day running of the operation (the choice of Operation Name rests with Maj Patel). The concept should include the following:

• General outline plan

• Personnel selection

• Resource requirements

• Assessed time constraints (if any).

Outline plan

1.  General outline plan

a) Go to the city of Wise using a cover story. (The cover story has to be sucessful in getting the demo team to Wise, it has to allow to bring us whatever kit we need to achieve mission aims, it has to allow to stay in Wise for however long we need without being conscripted on press ganged onto King Kurts navy etc, and finally it has to allow the demo to get out safely.

b) Find out through passive observation what we can of the enemies powder manufacturing facilities, such as location(s), guards, convoys or carts going in and out of the "factories" (this means using our eyes and ears, not bashing people on the head or kidnapping them from pubs or more active means.)

c) If we cannot get enough information on enemies powder manufacturing facilities through passive observation then use subtle active measures  (such as asking questions in pubs, mugging, kidnapping people, forceful questioning at a powder manufacturing facilities workers home and so on.)

d) Use sneaky means of creating explosions in "factories" as outlined in a previous 130 reginet email from Lt Col Killgore.  (adulterate the reactants involved in manufacture of powder before they are mixed together they will violently explode and look like an accident.

e) get out and rejoin 130EMR

2. Personnel requirements

from C Group upto 6 marines at least one female + Lt Tom Mouat

I want two rated demo experts. reason if one demo expert becomes incapacitated through illness of whatever I want a backup

I want two to four of our best "fast talkers". reason I suspect we will need to talk to people more than we will need to fight. So I want people agile with their minds and mouths.

I want a IIA local. I want a local who knows Wise. Also this helps a cover story I propose. A small one cart or barge trading company. IIA local is a merchant, marines are burlly guards. WE got to make delivery to Wise make goods some luxury goods, forge approipate paperwork. This allows to carry demo kit easily and some weapons with good reason. one female marine to act as merchants whore/wife.

3. Equipment

A very strudy cart or barge. Really not sure the best way to get to WISE by barge upriver or cart. I think a cart is better cause its simpler to use than a barge requiring less IIA help and less need to recruit local labour but takes longer and is probably slower. But I can live with lack of speed.

Trail kit

4. Timings.

The destruction of the enemy powder maufacturing facilities must occur if possible before news reaches Wise of the effects of other elements of Operation Crumhorn. I guess this about 1 to 2 weeks.

I think this means starting this element of Crumhorn a few days earlier than the action around directed at King Kurt and his the alien agents as talked about at the last planning led by Maj Nilsson.

I think we will need at least one week to get to Wise, and need 4 days to a week in Wise.

*******JIM000 please give if possible estimate of how long to get to Wise overland by cart and possible estimate of how long to get to Wise using a barge

FROM Major Peter "we nearly have a plan" Howland

Subject: OPERATION CRUMHORN

This memorandum reports the Outline Planning Meeting for OP Crumhorn.

Present: Major Nilsson , Major Howland, Major Patel, Acting L/Major Cornelius, Dr Agmar Thoughtpiece IIA, JIM-0000

Lt Col Killgore participated via communicator for part of the meeting.

1. OVERALL MISSION OBJECTIVES

1.1 Remove or neutralize the source of the non-Magrathean technology, including any personnel. Dr Thoughtpiece pointed out that King  Kurt himself might have been given knowledge of such technology and that he should be investigated as much as anyone else.

1.2 Destroy or otherwise neutralize the Gatling guns, including any capability for replacing them.

1.3 Destroy or otherwise neutralize any non-Magrathean technology manufacturing facility for Gatling gun ammunition.  Lt Col Killgore previously directed the preparation of a plan of operation to destroy Irion gun powder manufacturing facilities.

2. GATLING GUN DEPLOYMENT - LATEST INTELLIGENCE

There are four Irion Grand Army Offensives (see maps). Each of the arrows on the map represents an army, and each has one Spitfire Regiment. Each Spitfire Regiment has 3 or 4 Gatling guns. Thus there are 12 to 16 Gatling guns in operation. There is reportedly no depot for the Gatling guns; all maintenance and training is carried out in the field.

3. OUTLINE PLAN - MAIN PHASES

3.1 OUTLINE COVER STORY - Due to the misogyny of Magrathean society, 130 EMR will take on two main roles: 3.1.1 A company of mercenary soldiers from Soutland Island, consisting of most of the male marines;

3.1.2 A troop of acrobats / dancers, consisting of most of the female Marines (see L/Major Cornelius' proposed orbat).

3.2 INSERTION - 130 EMR will seek out the Irion army commanded by King Kurt, arriving in theatre aboard sailing ships. Two vessels may be required to allow the the company of mercenaries to arrive separately from the entertainers. King Kurt is reported to be with the army in the country of Midland.

Note: That Marines will only be landed from the GF submarines (see below) as required for each phase.

ACTION: IIA to provide 2 transport wagons with IIA crew in Magrathea; 1for the mercenary company and 1 for the troop of entertainers.

ACTION: IIA to provide all necessary documents to move freely in Magrathea.

3.3 RECONNAISSANCE - 3.3.1 King Kurt's Army, in Midland, first; 3.3.2 neighbouring army, in Potter, second; 3.3.3 & 3.3.4 the two armies in Nolan.

To identify all non-native agents and natives experts trained in non-native technology. To locate all Gatling guns and determine how they are guarded.

3.4 CAPTURE / NEUTRALIZE AGENTS & EXPERTS - King Kurt's army.

3.5 DESTROY / NEUTRALIZE GATLING GUNS - Including capability to assemble replacements. (This tactical operation might be combined with 3.4 as appropriate).

3.6 EXTRACTION - Including all Marines, prisoners etc.

PHASES 3.3 to 3.6 to be repeated for the four Spitfire Regiments identified.

4. BASE OF OPERATION

4.1 MAIN BASE - Three GF submarines are to be provided. To be equipped and prepared to treat casualties and receive prisoners.

4.2 FORWARD BASE(S) - To be provided by transport wagons.

5. SUPPORT PERSONNEL AND RESUPPLY

5.1 LANDING PARTY - Dr Agmar Thoughtpiece, Kelly Walker, Iain Mudlark, four IIA agents as transport wagon crew, one EN medic trained to treat casualties.

5.2 AIR DROP CAPABILITY - GF to prepare the capability to resupply by night-time air drop.

6. EQUIPMENT LIST

6.1 COMMUNICATIONS - Personal communicators to be concealed within clothing of all members of the landing party. To be capable of transmitting to the GF submarines.

6.2 MEDICAL - As required to treat casualties etc.

6.3 MERCENARY SOLDIERS - each: flintlock musket, sword, armour, flintlock pistol, knife; 100 x shrapnel grenades; 100 x stun grenades; 20 halberds; 5 x crossbow with 100 quarrels; 10 x grapnels with 10 metres rope.

6.4 ALL LANDING PARTY - each: flintlock pistol, knife.

6.5 TOOLS - Minimum 4 x each: crowbars, axes, sledge hammers, steel spikes; carpentry tools: hammer, saw, nails, etc.

6.6 DRUGS - 100 x doses of Truthdrug; 100 x doses Sleepdrug.

6.7 MONEY - Magrathean < and lots of it! >

6.8 CAMPING EQUIPMENT - sufficient for theoperation.
