The History of the ESS Agamemnon

HMS Agamemnon laying the first transatlantic cable of 2518 (1858 old date). A whale (extinct species of large sea mammal) is seen swimming near the cable in the foreground. This is a painting, as there was no photographic technology in ancient times.

The first HMS Agamemnon on record was Admiral Nelson's favourite ship.  It fought on the British side in the Napoleonic wars in sea surface battles on Earth, and was eventually sunk in 2469 (1809 old date).   Note: Britain was, at this time, a powerful independent state dominating the planet's oceans and controlling trade. It was where Britcit is now, on Earth.

A later incarnation was involved in early technological developments, being one of the ships involved in the first under-ocean communication cable in history.  Unfortunately the cable was destroyed by storms two weeks later.

In the early 2560s (early 20th century old date) HMS Agamemnon was the sister ship to HMS Lord Nelson, one of the last two British Pre-Dreadnoughts.

HMS AGAMEMNON served primarily in the Mediterranean Sea on Earth in the First Great European War (2574-2578) including in a campaign in a region of southern Europe then known as the Dardanelles (which was, at that time a major sea channel).
The British fleet going up the Dardanelles in 2575. Flagship HMS Superb, HMS Temeraire, HMS Lord Nelson, HMS Agamemnon at the back. The smoke is not the result of damage or a fire, the propulsion systems of the time relied on the combustion of carboniferous materials, and the plumes of smoke are a characteristic by-product.

This version was scrapped early 2580s (1920s old date)

The name wasn't used again for over a century until the construction of the United European Ship, UES Agamemnon - a fusion powered aircraft carrier.  It fought in the Sino-European war of 2757, and was destroyed in a major battle off the coast of Vietnam by a nuclear weapon.

The name was next used by the United Earth Space Forces, for one of the first interplanetary armed patrol ships, used for policing the outer planets.  This ship continued in service for about 35 years until it was lost in the Achilles asteroids, believed crashed. Subsequent archeological searches have failed, so far, to find the wreck.

The name was revived under the Empire, initially for a Corcoran Class Cruiser, and it served in the Martian War, and the Esteeler Insurrection.  It was scrapped in 3005.

The next incarnation was the current ESS Agamemnon. launched early in 3196.  It has fought in the Exterminator War, and survived engagements with functioning Exterminator Units (a rare occurance). It had a major system malfunction following the Tuskan Incident of 3199, and underwent a major overhaul, returning to service in time to take part in the opening phases of the Roach War in 3211-12, conducted in Sector EJ.
