Strategy of Minimum Regret

A military doctrine reputedly adopted during the pre-Exterminator Colonial Wars - a doctrine that is still extant in IEN training. The "Strategy of Minimum Regret" is generally quoted as "IEN vessels will not be placed at risk in defence of Colonial assets if the value of vessels exceeds the value of the asset". The "rule" is interpreted as such in many different ways, but is generally supposed to mean that there is no point deploying and possibly risking losing large numbers of naval vessels in defence of colonies whose value is less than that of the vessels deployed to protect them.
