Skynet was a computer system developed by the defense firm Cyberdyne Systems for the Solar Republic military between 2948 and 2953. Skynet was first built as a Defence Coordination Network to be given command over all military hardware and systems, including the tasking fleet operations. The strategy behind Skynet's creation was to remove the possibility of human error and slow reaction time to guarantee fast, efficient response to enemy attack.

In practice the limitations of the Skynet Bright Slave operating system meant that it was unable to respond adequately to complex or subtle threats. The upgrade necessary to allow it to respond appropriately would have been against the Stickney Treaty, and so the system was abandoned at the testing stage before going operational.
