A common term for a space elevator. Space elevator technology has been around for a while, linking a surface anchor point on the equator of a colony world with a geosynchronous orbital station. The 'stalk' then runs elevator cars up and down it to the station. It is fairly energy efficient, although slower than shuttle transits.

There are only a few such Beanstalks in human space, and none outside Quadrant Zero due to their high installation cost and extreme vulnerabiility to hostile action.

The Old Mars Beanstalk in the Sol System is probably the oldest still in day to day use.
