!Dr Vora Jelune **Dr Vora Jelune** was a controversial cyberneticist and artificial intelligence researcher who disappeared from a small privately funded laboratory on the newly settled independent world **[W18]** in 3240. Once considered a promising specialist in neural-machine interfaces, Jelune became increasingly marginalised as their research approached areas restricted by Quadrant laws prohibiting artificial intelligence. Jelune was born in 3197 on **[W15]**, now a New Republic colony world. The child of medical technicians, they studied computational neurology and cybernetic engineering before specialising in prosthetic nervous systems and machine-assisted rehabilitation. Early work on adaptive artificial limbs was well received, but Jelune increasingly argued that sophisticated cybernetics required machines capable of interpreting human intentions rather than simply responding to predetermined commands. During the 3220s and 3230s, Jelune conducted several controversial and marginally legal studies. These included experimental memory-assistance implants, adaptive personality modelling, neural interfaces capable of altering their own responses without direct programming, and attempts to preserve fragments of human cognitive patterns within artificial substrates. Jelune consistently denied creating sentient artificial intelligence, although critics accused them of deliberately exploring the limits of the law. Their academic reputation collapsed following the **Merenko Trials**, during which volunteers were subjected to experimental cybernetic feedback systems under conditions subsequently criticised as inadequate. Jelune avoided serious criminal penalties but lost most respectable institutional affiliations. By 3239 Jelune had established a small private laboratory on **[W18]**, an isolated, newly settled independent colony offering considerable freedom from institutional scrutiny. In 3240 Jelune disappeared. Laboratory equipment, research materials and several data systems vanished simultaneously. No body was recovered and there have been no confirmed subsequent sightings. Whether Jelune departed voluntarily or was removed by unknown parties remains unresolved.
