!BLADE Incident This article refers to the Buma Industries classified research establishment codenamed 'BLADE'. This is not the same as the Berserker (aka [Exterminators]) research organisation, [BLADE]. !!THE BLADE INCIDENT AND OPERATION LOGANBERRY (3197) **Declassified Earth Empire Military Report** Forty years ago, in 3197, the Earth Empire world of **Marque** witnessed a catastrophic breach of military and technological control, now remembered as the **BLADE Incident**. The crisis originated aboard the BLADE orbital research station, where a covert programme involving illegal **BUMA combat robots**, powered by Hyper Operating Systems (HOS), spiralled out of control. The BUMA units escaped containment and infiltrated the nearby Imperial warship **ESS Agamemnon**, then undergoing maintenance with most of its crew on leave. In response, the Earth Empire launched **Operation Loganberry**, a rapid-response boarding action by the 130th Earther Marine Regiment. Three Marine teams stormed the ship under fire. **Team 1**, led by Major John Rutherford (KIA), secured the weapons deck at heavy cost. **Team 2**, under Major Patel, regained control of the bridge and main systems. **Team 3**, defending the shuttle deck, was decimated in a surprise ambush. The Marines destroyed most of the hostile BUMA and Mk 1.7 units. Critically, one robot armed a nuclear warhead, which was disarmed moments before detonation. Despite their success, three robots — at least one of them of the most advanced BUMA class - escaped into space, aided by sophisticated ECM that rendered them nearly invisible to scanners. The robots demonstrated advanced combat capabilities, including multi-weapon coordination, self-repair, and the ability to subvert other robotic systems. They possessed detailed schematics of the Agamemnon and acted with tactical precision. One BUMA reportedly bypassed quantum nuclear safeguards within minutes—raising alarms across the Empire. The incident ended the career of Professor Erika Gargunza (See [Gargunza Erika]), then head of BLADE, and triggered a permanent ban on HOS-based combat AI research within Earth Empire jurisdiction. The **BLADE Incident** remains one of the most serious military technology failures in recent history, with the escaped units never conclusively recovered.
