The Polities

The first important thing to note about the player teams is that everyone is human. There are no known sentient aliens resident anywhere in human space - and the nearest 'alien' civilisations are very very distant from humanity.

Polities on New Cydonia
The Democratic Republic of Cydonia DRC A dictatorship ruled by President Wasserstein. It has few, if any human rights, and has recently been pursuing an aggressive policy to its colonial neighbours, particularly towards the New Cydonia Colony. The DRC has all the characteristics you would expect from a militarised dictatorship. The current regime is, however, well supported by many of the population who welcome the high standards of law and order and that the rapid transit system runs on time. Planetary major power
New Cydonia Colony Newbies This colony was primarily founded by freedom-loving former Martians, and the colony share many values with Mars and its colonies. The charater of the colonists is therefore very 'martian' (see below). Planetary minor power
North Continental Company Norts The set up for this colony was heavily funded by corporations from the Earth Empire, and they continue to have very good relations with the 'Home Planet'. They have a strong frontier self-reliance ethos. Planetary minor power
Diggers and Miners Collective DMC A colony of free-thinkers, who have good relations with the Esteelers. They operate on free market democratic pronciples, but with a strong respect for the rights of the working colonist. Planetary minor power
Independent Development Association IDA A strongly pro-venerian colony, the IDA is characterised by hard-working colonists and strongly centralised government. They routinely monitor their colonists, on the premise that if one has nothing to hide, one has nothing to fear. Planetary minor power
The 'Major Powers'
Greater Federation of Asteel (GFA) Esteelers Democratic, freedom-loving, a bit inefficient. Politically and socially bit like present-day America. The GFA is led by the charismatic President Alphie Potato, who has supervised a startling economic 'miracle' for the GFA in the last decade. Interstellar Major
Mars Association of Free Colonies (MAFC) Martians Independly-minded, loose association of freedom-loving colonies. Famous for being relaxed (like Australians) and for having very efficient military. The Martians are no afraid to get stuck in, and were at the forfront of fighting during the Exterminator War. Interstellar Major
The Centauri Conglomerate Centauri Heavily economically based, capitalist system. Profit-motive is strong. Believers in very small government. (eg even it's star-fleets are sub-contracted). Culturally, the Centauri tend to have a pathalogical hatred of robots and artificial intelligences. Interstellar Major
The Earth Empire (1) Earthers The oldest and strongest polity. Famous for its traditions and alleged arrogance (think 19th century British Empire). Interstellar Major
The Republic of New Venus (RNV) Venerians Young and some say aggressive polity. Famous for it's high degree of centralised control (think - Soviet Union). All Venerian Citizens are monitored by the state via embedded chips in their necks. Interstellar Major
The Sirian Socialist Republic (SSR) Sirians Highly bureaucratic and internally politicised polity. Makes very extensive use of robots (to whom it has given limited legal rights). The SSR is famous for the slowness of its policy making and inconsistency of approach. Interstellar Minor
The Union of Xyon (UoX) Xyonists Small, strongly commercial and trade based polity. Has strong links with the GFA. Famous for its intelligence services. It has grown substantially in the last decade. Interstellar Minor
The Wolf359 Commonwealth Wolfers An older polity with long traditions. Fairly close-knit and insular. Has a Royal Family. (Think - present day Britain), which is, in theory at least a constitutional monarchy. Interstellar Minor

(1) Constitutionally the Earth Empire is actually called 'The Solar Republic' - but this term is practically never used.
(2) These are grossly over-simplified stereotypes - the actual character of a polity of millions or billions of humans is obviously much more complex than that.
