Earth: Mostly harmless. Earth Empire: The Empire is probably the strongest interstellar polity in the human universe. It is ruled by a semi-hereditary First Citizen (known colloquially at 'The Emperor'). Earthworm. A slang term used for someone born on Earth. Sometimes used to apply to any citizen of the Earth Empire. It has been in use so long that it is not regarded as a mortal insult any longer - but its use is generally regarded at very rude. ECONINT The famous Centauri economic intelligence gathering centre. It provides optimising information for investment and data on main competitors for the Centauri Democratic Board and for anyone else who would like high quality information. Election Supervision. Given the very wide range of local electoral conditions, major polities monitor local elections on their member worlds to some degree. Some impose very specific conditions - such as the degree of suffrage etc. So every politiy has an Electoral Monitoring Commission (or the equivalent). There is also an interstellar advisory body known as the Interstellar Election Commission. This is an independent not-for profit corporation, finded by grants and donations that exists to advise new colonies on their electoral procedures, and to act as an impartial observer where there is some doubt about the fairness of an election. Its current Head Office is on Gorilla Station, Q0. Empty Space. Most working star maps show only those systems suitable for human colonisation. As anyone can see, these are not the only stars in human space - each map grid square is far from empty - containing, as it does, between 100 and 200 other stars (there are approx. 5000 stars within 30 parsecs of Sol). Most of these lack planets - and those with planets are unsuitable due to a dangerously active star, it being a binary system, or having an uneconomically large M25 limit (generally anything over about 50 au). All these stars have been visited by human ships and are surveyed periodically by survey ships of various polities to check for unstability, or risk of nova or supernova. See here (downloadable document) for examples of the 150 of so notable stars nearest to Sol. Energy Deflector Lens. An expensive warship system that is designed to deflect plasma attack from PAD-class weapons. It has not been deployed operationally on warships for about a century. Escort Carrier: A comverted merchant vessel that carries and operates (after a fashion) up to 4 pacifiers. Exterminators: The name given to a force of hostile robot battleships, of unknown provenance, that has attacked quadrants 5, 6 and 7 starting in 3196. Mankind has suffered horrendous losses in the face of these machines, but currently seems to have the situation under control, remaining military operations against the Exterminators consist largely of finding and destroying their bases.. Also dubbed 'berserkers' by some elements of the tabloid press, though this term is largely inaccurate - since their tactics show no signs of being in any way like the viking berserker warrior of old. Exterminator Super-Battleship (ESB): The main striking force of the Exterminator threat. Comprised of six, independently mobile units (codenamed 'VIKING units') - the ESB connects these units together for combat, and is much more powerful than the largest human warship. Usually entire fleets are required to defeat a single ESB. Expatriation Ship. In some polities, early colonies were formed of social outcasts and criminals. This is a liner designed to keep unwilling colonists secure until they arrive at their, often quite inhospitable, destination.
