  Martian Ground Forces

(thanks to Simon Cornelius)

Unlike the typical organisation for Ground Force units in human polities, Mars has few Ground Force Divisions outside Quadrant Zero. Instead almost all divisions in the colonies are permanently configured as a pair of Ground Force Brigades. Typically one Brigade (Ground) from a division is serving planetside whilst the other (Space Assault) is permanently assigned to an ALSI. [Brigades typically swap roles every 3-4 years, at which time divisional exercises are carried out]. The former is about 20% larger than the latter.

Divisions rarely train as a single unit and therefore co-operation at this level can take a few days to regain. However the Martian Command believe the advantage of permanently having the same ALSI and brigade operating together coupled with the inherent flexibility that the brigade model brings is worth this.

GF Space Assault Brigade Organisation

GF Ground Combat Brigade Organisation

  • 127 vehicle crew and integral techs (light personal armour)

Battalion HQ Company

Ground Company x 3

Basic combat formation

5 Ground Combat Vehicles, each with a crew of 2 equipped as infantry, plus 8 infantry men

5 Hovertanks (crew of 3 each)

Weapons Company

Supporting heavy weapons. Less mobile than ground companies, but more firepower in the form of stand-off precision guided weapons, and guided artillery.

4 Stand-off Missile Launcher vehicles (crew of 2 each)

4 SP Guided Artillery vehicles (crew of 2 each)

4 limber vehicles (crew of 2 each)

Logistics Platoon

8 Logistics Vehicles, with 12 crew total

Technical Platoon

6 Tech vehicles, with 32 crew and techs

AIR Battalion

Air Company

Six crewed Pacifier-like combat atmosphere craft designed to operate between low orbit and ground level. Associated ground staffs and equipment.

RPV Company

Six remotely-piloted Pacifier-like combat atmosphere craft designed to operate between low orbit and ground level. Associated ground staffs and equipment.

Air Support Company

Eight VTOL aerodyne close support vehicles, with fire-and-forget guided missiles and the capacity to lift 4 infantrymen in addition to the pilot. Associated ground staffs and equipment.

Air Logs Company

Eight logistics VTOL aerodynes used for rapid replenishment of forward units. Capable of transporting infantry in emergencies. Associated ground staffs and equipment.

Orbital Battalion

This contains specialised near-space services.

Orbital company

Includes CommSats, SpySats, and other ground-orbit communications and intelligence gathering services, together with basic launchers to put them in orbit if necessary.

Long Range company

A number of Intercontinental weapons, usually missiles. Typically, a Ground Brigade has 4 ICBMs, which are nuclear capable, although not all GF divisions are routinely issued with nukes.

Logistics Battalion

Logistics company

Logistics personnel and vehicles

Medical Company

Specialised ambulance vehicles and medical personnel. Fully mobile.

Transport Company

Additional and specialised transport capability.

Space Transportation

An assault landing ship (ALSI) has enough capacity to transport around half of a single GF division and all its support units, and shuttle them planetside. Naval support is required in the event of defensive fire. A full division can be transported in a specialised Troop Transport (TPT-class) but these cannot support combat landings.

Weapons

Infantry

GF Armour is less well protected against radiation and hard vacuum than marine armour - but is much more mobile. Typically GF armour can allow a continual jogging speed of around 15kph, for periods of up to 24 hours between recharge. The main personal weapons are HV projectile weapons, with effective ranges out to 1km.

Ground Combat Vehicles

The Hovertank is a highly mobile heavily armoured combat vehicle with 2 crew, and mounting either a heavy HV projectile weapon (range c.4km) in the standard hovertank role or an array of stand-off precision guided missiles (range c. 5km) in the Close Support role. Also has a Multi-cannon.

The General Combat Vehicle is an armoured personnel carrier with room for 8 GF or marine personnel in full armour, plus a crew of two who are equipped with GF armour. Speed of up to 80kph is typical. Also has a Multi-cannon and a couple of missiles.

Light scout vehicles are high speed armoured hovercars, with a multi-cannon, sophisticated sensors and speed of up to 200kph.
