"Giles" : Personal Background:
Giles was once a fully qualified Combat Robot Tech with the Esteeler
Marine
Corps, and had served with some distinction on a number of operations.
Following a botched boarding operation, in which Giles was severely
wounded, he developed an intolerance to MAD and some other drugs during
the
course of his rehabilitation.
During his absence, an audit was carried out and it was discovered that
certain valuable spares were missing from the inventory. It transpired
that
Giles had been supplementing his Marine pay by ordering replacement parts,
repairing the damaged items and swapping the identification tags. The
new
items were then sold.
He was discharged immediately, and lost his invalid pension.
Giles was bitterly resentful that he was thrown out of the service, after
being almost killed by "some officer's stupidity", and having
a question on
his medical status raised by a botched rehabilitation regime. He regarded
the sale of spares as totally trivial and a "perk of the job".
After a number of low income temporary jobs, Giles found himself working
for a hospital specialising in support equipment for people crippled by
injuries that do not respond to normal treatment.
During this period he became personally attached to a young Data Archivist
in the Central Tax Office who was crippled in an industrial accident at
work. She too lost her job and the possibility of compensation over certain
"irregularities" in her accounts discovered while she was recovering.
They became very close indeed and Giles vowed to fund a whole-body
transplant for his girlfriend. The only possibility of a full recovery
available. Since neither of them were in highly paid positions, she took
a
job in the Central Information Archive to make ends meet, while Giles
set
out to raise the Cr 10,000 needed as quickly as possible.
Since time was a significant factor, and his resentment at the way both
of
them had been treated, Giles turned to the only profession likely to raise
the funds quickly enough - Piracy!
